The Juvenile Dependency Mediation Program (JDMP), in partnership with the Mediator Training Center, hosted its annual two-day training focused on deepening mediators’ understanding of the full scope of a Child Protective Services case.
The first day of training examined the professional lens, beginning with a presentation from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office about how law enforcement is often the first point of contact in dependency cases. This was followed by detailed discussions with representatives from the Washoe County Human Services Agency and the Division of Child and Family Services. Presenters outlined the intake and investigation processes, described efforts to prevent family separation, and shared how removal decisions are made in practice. The session also included an overview of the Kinship Guardian Assistance Payment (Kin-GAP) Program and its role in achieving permanency.
The second day shifted to the family lens, beginning with remarks from members of the Tru Vista Foundation. These individuals shared their lived experience navigating the dependency system as parents, giving mediators a closer look at the personal challenges and successes families face throughout the process. The training concluded with powerful insight from a young adult who spent their childhood in foster care, offering a firsthand perspective on how these systems affect children’s lives.
To complement the program’s continued growth, JDMP also unveiled an updated program logo during the training:

The annual training remains a cornerstone of JDMP’s commitment to high-quality mediation services and to promoting a better understanding of all the experiences that shape dependency cases in Nevada.
